More Than Greens

About a week ago a friend brought to our attention, in a financial magazine, an article about a vertical farm.  Although indoor farming is increasingly gaining attention — most often in the form of vertical farming — this new article has prompted us to point out another perspective on this trend.

Vertical farming efficiently creates space for produce which would otherwise require substantial acreage, water usage and healthy soil.  The efficient use of water and air movement are environmentally positive features within these systems which utilize varying combinations of robotics and technicians.

While the burgeoning awareness of indoor agriculture — as possibility — is a positive, given many environmental considerations, the crops currently being grown indoors, vertically or otherwise, are limited in scope because the systems do not support diversity.

Most often the resulting produce is greens, tomatoes and strawberries.

One can ask:  If your family is hungry would a diet of greens, tomatoes and strawberries be sufficient nourishment — and calorie content — to feed everyone adequately?

The obvious answer reminds us that it is essential to either broaden the scope of indoor agriculture or continue to be primarily reliant on outdoor growing seasons which are influenced by increasingly changing weather patterns globally.

An Emphasis on Well-Being

In this time of tumultuous change, there is an increasing emphasis on the desire for well-being and how to attain — and maintain — optimum health.

Contaminant-free nutrition is a necessary contributor to optimized well-being.

Strong immune systems are significantly tied to nutritious food as well as attitude.  Nutritious food is thus basic for thriving.

Societal stability is considerably connected to food supply.  Although there is — fortunately — an increasing interest in home gardening, that is not an option which is available to everyone.

There are few regions on the planet which are suitable for year-round growing.  Those regions are changing due to inconsistent and unpredictable weather patterns.

Rising food prices are indicative of shortages.  Concurrently, produce quality has noticeably declined.

For supply to meet increasing demand for high nutrition foods, there is a clear need for a change in how food is grown.

For environmental well-being, instead of depletion, growing methods must become plant-friendly and resource-efficient.

Green Oasis Now, with an emphasis on well-being — ongoing for decades — combined with our approach to Technology Serving Nature, is well positioned to make a major contribution to needed innovation.

New Year, New Solutions

Enlightened collaboration and cooperation are happening — all over the globe — among those who are enthusiastically meeting the challenges of today’s world.

Used productively, the internet makes possible the meeting of creative minds in countless areas of expertise — across national boundaries, and often outside the realm of traditional organizational structures.

For example, highly talented and accomplished scientists and engineers are sharing cutting-edge knowledge with one another and those who are interested in their fields of expertise.

The wave of the future is cooperation with a common goal wherein it is recognized that it is necessary — for survival, as well as thriving — that humankind bring forth the best in themselves and one another.

New solutions, to all manner of issues, spring forth readily from the wellspring of creative inspiration as humanity increasingly embraces the harmony and balance inherent in enlightened collaboration.

Food: An Interaction with Nature

The basics of how food is grown are well known — seeds, nutrient rich soil, a balance of sunshine and rain.  This simple understanding worked for generations when the weather systems were reasonably stable.

Now, however, unpredictable variations in the global weather have created new circumstances.

We have the ability to go to the moon, but we cannot control the jet stream.

The changing jet stream creates weather anomalies.  Weather anomalies affect growing seasons.  Growing seasons affect food supply.  Abundant and available food supply is necessary for societal stability.

Even with no knowledge of weather related problems, the food supply indicators are obvious — rising prices attributable to food supply issues as well as increasing production and transportation costs.

The patterns of instability which have increased in recent years are not expected to change.  Nature is in charge.

The requirements for growing food have not changed.  What is continuing to change — necessarily — is the ways in which these requirements can be met.

In these changing circumstances, in which Nature is in charge, it is we humans who must adapt — as consumers, gardeners, farmers, growers — through the choices that we make.

We are a crossroads where the adage “necessity is the mother of invention” is increasingly apt.

We can harmonize with Nature, and Nature’s signals to us, by taking Nature’s requirements indoors.

Increasingly this is occurring.  There are many small indoor home growing systems which are being enthusiastically utilized.  Alternative commercial indoor systems, mostly designed for salad greens or strawberries, are not uncommon.

None of these commercial systems compare with the plant-friendly technology and valuable diversity of the Green Oasis Now Heart Greenhouse System.

Carbon Capture and Common Sense

The Carbon Capture Technology page which was added to this website, a few days ago, provides an overview of some of the diverse applications of carbon capture technology which are inherent in the design of many of the Green Oasis Now projects.

Within the global carbon cycle, healthy trees are among the primary carbon dioxide reservoirs.  They naturally absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

The proliferation of greening projects worldwide is resulting in multi-millions of tree seedlings being planted.  The seedlings which successfully grow to maturity will become significant carbon capture contributors in the future.

In contrast, the burning of forests produces carbon dioxide.  Forest fires are reducing carbon dioxide reservoirs faster than new tree growth can replace it.

Generations ago, forest dwellers naturally utilized the forest products and thus inevitably promoted low forest fire potential.  Forest undergrowth has a very low carbon reservoir significance and a very high forest fire vulnerability.

Native Americans refer to trees as the “standing people”.  Common sense suggests that there is every reason to protect the existing “standing people” with new approaches to sustainable forest management which address the forest fire vulnerability.

With new approaches — technology serving nature — existing forests can be groomed and restored to optimum growth potential. The enhancement of the carbon reservoir is one of many benefits.

Common sense also suggests that every action humankind takes to harmonize with Nature benefits both.  We are not disconnected.

Invention: A Point of View

“…Many inventors… lack patience.  They lack the willingness to work a thing out slowly and clearly and sharply in their mind, so they can actually 'feel it work'.  They want to try their first idea right off, and the result is they use up lots of money and lots of good material, only to find eventually that they are working in the wrong direction.  We all make mistakes, and it is better to make them before we begin… My method is different.  I do not rush into actual work.  When I get a new idea, I start at once building it up in my imagination, and make improvements and operate the device in my mind.  When I have gone so far as to embody everything in my invention, every possible improvement I can think of, and when I see no fault anywhere, I put into concrete form the final product of my brain.”  Nicola Tesla

This is how all the Green Oasis Now inventions and innovations have been developed.  With such an approach, construction into tangible form and efficient operation is readily and effectively achieved.  Meticulously refined design will function flawlessly in an orderly and sequential manner.

Furthermore, during the design process Green Oasis Now looks through a lens which includes non-obsolescence.  Longevity of our innovations and inventions is thus inherent.  We invent for the ages, not for the moment.
